TOSSair is a complimentary program of TOSSworks/after. Teaching-artists participate in a residency in which they work with students, make art, and donate a percentage of their proceeds to the TOSSafter scholarship fund.
Maya of Morganton
Learn more about our upcoming TOSSair resident, Francisco Diego, and his project, Maya of Morganton. RSVP for our community dinners!
What: The goal of our project, Maya of Morganton, will be to develop an empathetic space for community integration where the contributions of the Mayan Guatemalans can be understood, promoted and enhanced. If we are fulling funded (we are applying for an inclusive public art grant through the Reynolds Foundation) we would commission a number of local artists (both American and Mayan) to capture and articulate the contributions of this group through a mural, garden, and documentary. The documentary will be screened at a concluding celebration in 2020.
When: Summer 2019-Summer 2020
Where: Little Guatemala, 810 E Union St, Morganton, NC 28655
Dinner #1: First, yummy dinner. Then Christian and Erica Ramazzini's will share their story and the impetus for their project, Little Guatemala. TOSS creative director, Kathryn Ervin, will describe the project and Guatemalan families, having been asked to bring items that represent Guatemala to them, will share informally.
Dinner #2: First, yummy dinner (always). Then our lead artist, Francisco Diego, will share his progress on the mural and garden design. The gathering will be invited to use elements (collage elements and art materials) to create their own mural and garden design, inspired by Diego’s work. Don’t be scared. It will be great. We hope you might even find that part of your idea is incorporated into our design!
Dinner #3: This last dinner will be a serious party as the mural design will have been completed!! There will be some Guatemalan vendors to share what they offer in Morganton, some music, some treats, and of course, Guatemalan cuisine!
